General Interest

General
Kenya qualified for Tokyo despite finishing as runners-up at the 2019 Africa Sevens tournament in Tunisia. South Africa won the tournament, but declined the qualification berth, gifting the Kenyan team a spot at their second Olympic Games.

At the 2016 Games in Rio, Kenya finished bottom of Pool B following losses to New Zealand, France and Spain. In the ranking play-offs matches they also lost out to Japan, before overcoming Colombia 22-10 to earn their sole victory at the Games and an 11th-place finish.

The Kenyan team have rarely featured in the World Series and did not compete at any legs of the 2019/20 edition. They competed at the Clermont-Ferrand leg in 2015/16 and played as an invitational team at the Dubai tournament during the 2018/19 Series.

Kenya have made more of an impression at continental level. They claimed the Africa Sevens title in 2018, and finished as runners-up to South Africa five times between 2014 and 2019.
