General Interest

General
The Republic of Korea are making their debut appearance at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. They secured a spot at Tokyo 2020 with victory on home soil at the 2019 Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Incheon. They topped Pool C before victories over Malaysia and the People's Republic of China in the knockout stages set up a final against Hong Kong, China, where they prevailed 12-7.

The Korean team have not made a significant impact at world level in recent years. They were invited to one leg of the 2019/20 World Series, in Los Angeles, where they lost all five matches they played and finished the tournament ranked 16th. They competed at the Hong Kong, China leg of the World Series in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The Republic of Korea have not participated at the World Cup since 2005, with their best performance at the tournament coming in 1997, when they reached the quarterfinals.

The Korean team have enjoyed more success at continental level. They have won a medal at each edition of the Asian Games since rugby sevens was first contested at the event in 1998, including gold in 1998 and 2002. They claimed bronze at the 2018 Games in Indonesia.
