General
The Kenyan team are making their second Olympic appearance in Tokyo, having competed in Rio in 2016. They qualified for the 2020 Games as winners of the 2019 Africa Sevens tournament in Johannesburg, and will be looking to build on their 11th-place finish in Rio. In a tough group with Great Britain, New Zealand and Japan, teams that all went on to rank in the top five, Kenya recorded three defeats. In the ranking play-off matches they lost to Spain, but then beat hosts Brazil 24-0.

Kenya finished 12th in the curtailed 2019/20 World Series, recording a best tournament result of seventh in Cape Town. In recent years their World Series highlights have included winning the Singapore leg of the 2015/16 edition, and consecutive runners-up finishes in Vancouver and Hong Kong, China during the 2017/18 Series. Their best overall World Series ranking is fifth, which they achieved in 2012/13.

At the 2018 World Cup in San Francisco, they lost out in the round of 16 to Scotland and went on to place 16th overall. Kenya have twice reached the semifinals of the World Cup, in 2009 and 2013.

Kenya are consistently among the top African sides, with the 2019 Africa Sevens triumph their third victory at the tournament since 2013.
