He was made national team captain in early 2020, first leading the side at the 2020 Hamilton Sevens tournament. He says taking on the role was made easier by playing alongside South Africa's veteran squad members. "I am very lucky to have some very experienced players around me. Branco du Preez and Chris Dry are the two most capped Blitzboks ever and Cecil Afrika is the leading points scorer of all time, and they are playing next to me. They are great people and great players and I learned a lot from them, on and off the field. They are big shoes to fill, but the examples set have been great, so I know what to do." SPRINGBOK AMBITION
Speaking in late 2020, he said that besides competing in sevens at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, his focus was on rugby union [15-a-side] and breaking into the senior South African national rugby union team. "I've decided to commit to 15s full-time because I hope to become a Springbok. So with the exception of the Olympics, I won't be playing for the Blitzboks again soon.
