He began the sport in 2006 at Hamilton Boys' High School and Waikato Rowing Club in New Zealand. (rowingnz.kiwi, 01 Sep 2018)
:
Initially he played rugby, but when he went to high school he found himself getting pushed around because he didn't weigh much. The school's rowing coach, Glenn Ross, suggested he take up the sport as a coxswain. He quickly enjoyed rowing, helped by early success with his U15 crew. (nzherald.co.nz, 13 Sep 2014)

"I wish that when I was younger I had been told to take all criticism constructively and turn it into positive action. Even if the points come across in a negative way, turn it into something useful, and use it to become a better coxswain." (chatterbox.com, 25 Sep 2017)

He was named 2015 Athlete's House Sportsman of the Year at University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand. (waikato.ac.nz, 22 Oct 2015)

General Interest

General
GENDER NEUTRAL COX
In 2019 he was part of the first New Zealand women's eight team to win a world championship gold medal, which also secured a quota spot for New Zealand at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "After Rio 2016 they [World Rowing] changed the rules, so coxswains were gender neutral. I've been with the men previously for about six or seven years, and then jumped in with the women this year [2019]. It's completely different, to be honest. The race is longer, so tactically it's quite different, but I found the women fantastic. They're good listeners and they work really hard. I've had a fantastic year with the women. There was a bit of an adjustment period. At the start of this year we were still rotating - a week with the men and a week with the women, and we kept swapping - so that was really beneficial." (newshub.co.nz, 12 Sep 2019)

EDUCATION, OTHER ACTIVITIES
He has completed a bachelor's degree in English and creative writing at the University of Waikato, and in 2018 began a master's degree at the same college. He likes to write in his spare time, and wants to pursue a career in journalism after rowing. He is also a registered independent marriage celebrant, which means he can legally perform marriages and civil unions in New Zealand. He is of Maori descent, with links to the Ngati Porou iwi [people] of the East Cape and Gisborne region. (rowingnz.kiwi, 01 Sep 2018; olympic.org.nz, 01 Mar 2016)
