He began rowing at around age 14 in New Zealand. He transferred from Lincoln High School to Christchurch Boys' High School to pursue rowing more seriously. "I enjoyed doing it by myself, but I felt like I needed to be doing it with a group." (nzherald.co.nz, 16 Sep 2016)
