He took up rowing at age 14 at Walton Rowing Club in Walton-on-Thames, England. (britishrowing.org, 22 May 2016)

His father advised him to take up rowing as he doubted Angus would have a future as a rugby player. "I liked it from the word go. It gets a grip on you. An eight goes 20mph, but it feels like 100mph. Whizzing along, not that high above the water, it feels like you're flying." (britishrowing.org, 22 May 2016; telegraph.co.uk, 21 Mar 2016)

British rower Katherine Grainger. "I was lucky enough to see Katherine finally get her Olympic gold medal [in 2012]. I remember coming away from that thinking, 'I want this'." (telegraph.co.uk, 21 Mar 2016; dailyrecord.co.uk, 03 Aug 2016)

He was named Team Durham's Sportsman of the Year during his final year at Durham University in 2013. (britishrowing.org, 22 May 2016)

General Interest

General
ROWING ON ICE
He said he enjoyed rowing in icy waters when he was a student at Durham University in England. "If you can row in awful conditions, you can row in anything. [It] makes you tougher. I went to uni in Durham, and I remember my first year there, it was minus 13 [degrees celsius] and the [River] Tyne was freezing all around us. We were rowing along and heard this cracking, and we realised we were surrounded by ice. [I] loved it." (telegraph.co.uk, 21 Mar 2016)

EARLY DAYS
After graduating university in 2013, with a degree in natural sciences, he decided to row full-time for Leander Club in Henley-on-Thames, England. Initially he had to finance himself, working part-time in a bar as well as tutoring local youngsters in mathematics and chemistry. After a year of rowing at Leander Club, he was disappointed not to make the Great Britain team, but he said missing out gave him a new determination. "My aim for the first year was just to survive, but after I came fourth in the [national] trials, I was little bit disappointed not to be put in a boat. It provided me with extra motivation." (telegraph.co.uk, 21 Mar 2016)

FURTHER EDUCATION
He has also earned a master's degree in stem cells and regeneration from the University of Bristol in England. (werow.co.uk, 13 Feb 2018; LinkedIn profile, 01 Jan 2019)
