His father Peter competed in rowing at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, finishing fourth in the men's eight. His brother Matt Beaumont works for the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland and was a candidate for the party in the UK parliament elections in 2019 for the district of Fermanagh and South Tyrone. His partner Lovisa Claesson has represented Sweden at international level in rowing and competed at the 2019 World Championships in Linz Ottensheim, Austria. In August 2015 he suffered four fractured vertebrae in his back, two broken ribs and a torn hip flexor muscle when he and double sculls partner Angus Groom collided with the men's eight crew during a training camp in Alentejo, Portugal. He spent a week in hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, and was immobilised for six weeks. He sat in a boat again four months after the accident. His father, who competed in rowing internationally, persuaded him to take up the sport. At first he began rowing in winter and did not like it, but in the summer months he began to enjoy it. "When I was growing up I thought it was pretty cool that I had a dad who was an Olympian. I remember watching the Olympics in Athens [2004] and thought it was really cool. I just started rowing then and I thought if my dad can do that then it was an exciting thing to be involved in. Initially I was smaller than everyone so I didn't enjoy it as I kept losing. Perhaps it was the warm weather [in summer], community spirit and having an ice cream afterwards - it was such a nice atmosphere to be in." General Interest

General
CLUB CAPTAIN
In January 2020 he was named captain of the Leander Club rowing team in Henley-on-Thames, England, taking over the role from British rower Vicky Thornley. He had previously served as vice-captain of the club between 2014 and 2015. "The club has been a part of my life since I was a young boy, when my dad Peter used to bring me to Leander during Henley Royal Regatta each year. I was so excited and inspired as a 10-year-old, meeting the GB four and Jurgen Grobler a few weeks before they won Olympic gold in Athens. It feels very special to become captain of a club with such history, and a star-studded list of past captains." (henleystandard.co.uk, 13 Jan 2020; impartialreporter.com, 11 Jan 2020; LinkedIn profile, 01 Jan 2020)

ATHLETE DIRECTOR
In 2018 he was elected as athlete director on British Rowing's board of directors. (LinkedIn profile, 01 Jan 2020; britishrowing.org, 12 Jul 2018)

RIO REPLACEMENT
He was a late addition to the Great Britain quadruple sculls crew for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, after Graeme Thomas withdrew because of illness. (teamgb.com, 02 Aug 2016)

STUDIES
In 2017 he completed a bachelor's degree in criminology at the University of London and says he only picked the subject because it would fit around his rowing commitments. "I originally wanted to study biology, but seeing how much lab work was involved, how intense the lecture timetable was and my rowing training schedule, it just wasn't going to happen. So I immediately realised that if I was going to make this work, I had to pick a course that worked for my timetable. That's where criminology came in." (travellingpeach.com, 30 Sep 2017)

LIFE-CHANGING ACCIDENT
He described the 2015 collision between the British men's eight boat and his and crewmate Angus Groom's double sculls boat as life-changing. The accident caused him to spend a week in hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, before being flown home by air ambulance. "When the accident happened there was a split second where I heard a noise and felt a bit of a bump. I knew we had hit something, and then an instant later I felt this big hit in my back. I still thought we had hit a marker buoy or something until I felt the pain. My mind was going about a million miles an hour. I wondered if I'd be able to walk [again]. I was scared and cold. I had no idea what the damage was. I just knew it was something I hadn't felt before and I didn't like it. I thought it was the last time I would ever row. I wasn't sure if I would ever walk again. I thought it was life-changing." (windsorobserver.co.uk, 10 Mar 2016; dailymail.co.uk, 06 Mar 2016)
