Her older brother Landon has played for the Canadian national military football team. Her other older brother Joren has represented Canada in volleyball at junior level, and competed at the 2009 World Junior Championships in Pune, India. She did not plan on joining any organised sports when she began university, but ultimately joined the rowing team for the social aspect of the sport. "On my first day of class, I saw a poster inviting people to try out for the rowing team. So I did. It was purely a social outlet for me in those first few years. It gave us [her group of friends] a chance to race each other and travel together, which ended up having such a lasting positive impact on me, I kept going with it."
