His first experience in rowing was at a summer camp. He was age nine at the time and the minimum age to row was 11, but he was allowed to take part as he was taller than everyone else. PAIRS PARTNERSHIP
He has been rowing with pairs partner Kai Langerfeld since 2013. "We've rowed together at the national training centre since 2013, and we have very high standards each and every day. We've earned each other's trust and respect and that pays off in the boat." (timescolonist.com, 31 Aug 2019)

INJURIES AND AGE
In 2018, after being treated for wrist tendinitis and a stress fracture in his rib cage, he said he no longer takes it for granted when he is good health. "I'm old, I'm getting injured, is this the way it's going to go now? I'm not taking anything for granted ever anymore. I know that at any moment my body could give out on me again. You can't row like that, though. You can't row cautious like that. You just have to do everything you can to carry yourself when you're off the water." (recorder.ca, 28 Aug 2018)

RIO 2016 DISAPPOINTMENT
After the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where Canada's men's rowing team failed to win any medals, he said he expected Canada's men to be more successful at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "It definitely didn't pan out at these [2016] Games. You can look at it and say, this didn't work. But what if [several] boats medal at the next Games? What if Canadian men's rowing gets three medals, four medals? I don't see myself being able to walk away from it after [2016]. It's unfinished business. We didn't have that success [in 2016] but I think it will pan out in the long-term." (nationalpost.com, 12 Aug 2016; thestar.com, 12 Aug 2016)
