He was spotted by Canadian rower Ben Rutledge at a talent identification camp. "I was tiny and terrible at rowing. But during the try-out I think somehow the coach that we had saw something in me and picked me last on this 12-guy team. But rowing was just rowing. I never really saw it as a sport that I was really interested in. My two older brothers started rowing in high school and that looked like fun, I wanted to give it a try. I liked cross-country and soccer way more. I just rowed because it was something that was relatable to my family. But then I got into rowing and I was like, 'Why is this sport so interesting?' and I was really enjoying it. It was a super competitive environment. I found a real joy and love for coming together in a crew boat." (Canadian Athletes Now Fund YouTube channel, 24 Apr 2020; delta-optimist.com, 11 Sep 2015)

"Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit however, it lasts forever." (olympic.ca, 23 Jun 2015)
