In the 2019/20 season his younger brother Liam rowed for Dartmouth College in the United States of America. His other brother Michael has also competed in rowing. (dartmouthsports.com, 01 Jan 2021; Go & Go Vikes podcast, 15 Jun 2020)

He began rowing in grade eight at school. "In grade 10 I was invited to this high performance team, it was eight high school students. I was the youngest, and because of that I was in the single [sculls]. At that point there was a lot of training." (Go & Go Vikes podcast, 15 Jun 2020; vicnews.com, 04 Feb 2016)
:
He was encouraged to try the sport by one of his friends. "Rowing was a big thing, my whole grade eight class just did rowing. But that was kind of my cross-training for other sports I was doing at the time. I was doing soccer, a little bit of basketball, track, and cross-country. Eventually those other sports became cross-training for rowing. I had to make the difficult decision to drop some of the sports. I really enjoy that the amount of work you put in is the result you'll get. It's a very honest sport and I really admire that. It's kept me busy and kept me out of trouble."
