"Someone recommended that I should try rowing because of my height so I tried rowing one summer at our local club and really liked it. I played hockey growing up and I always liked the competitive aspect of the sport. He initially aimed to qualify in double sculls ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, teaming up with Canadian rower Matthew Buie. However, the pair were not able to secure a spot for the Games at the 2019 World Championships in Linz, Austria, which Jones felt was a result of the surgery he had needed on his arm in April that year. Rowing Canada then reevaluated its crews and decided to move Jones to single sculls. He qualified for the 2020 Games at the 2021 World Rowing Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland. "The last five years [speaking in 2021] of work has been leading to this moment. I'm just throwing everything at it. It's been a long time coming and is just nice after over 18 months of working toward this to have finally done it and to know that I get to race in Tokyo."
