BREAK AND RETIREMENT PLANS
He took a break from the sport after competing at the 2017 World Cup event in Lucerne, Switzerland. In 2018 he joined the Kilgore Fire Academy in Texas, United States of America, but a year later he decided to return rowing with a view to representing Canada at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He plans to pursue a career in firefighting after competing at the 2020 Games. "I thought I was retiring for good [in 2017]. I wasn't sure how much I could contribute to the team anymore. I went and did a ride-along with the Victoria City Fire Department [in Canada], and the guys there, they all spoke highly of the Kilgore academy. That was kind of the beginning where I got interested in the fire service. [Being a firefighter] follows the values that I've been working towards as an athlete, where you're on a team with highly motivated individuals. I had a lot of lonely chair rides thinking about rowing and hearing what the guys were doing back in Victoria and I began to really miss it and I came to the conclusion that I wasn't done with the sport yet."
