"I was quite sporty and never considered rowing at all. I was basically forced to join rowing, I was nearly afraid to get out the car. I was just nervous because no one in my class would have done rowing, but I gave it a go and really enjoyed it. It's kind of addictive. I was 14 at the time, so I was a bit older than usual. Usually people start in first year but I tried other sports. My friends were into rowing and they said, 'Give it a try'. My friends that were into rowing were very good. Because I joined late, I was gunning to catch up with them. 2014 was my first season to compete at the Irish championships, so that was the first year I took it seriously. 2015, my second season, was the first year I represented Ireland." BALANCING SPORT AND STUDY
In early 2021 she was in her second year of studies at University College Cork in Ireland, and says it is not always easy to balance sport with studies. "I suppose it is quite difficult, I'm not going to lie, but I'm so lucky with the course that I am in. The management and the lecturers are so accommodating. This time last year [January 2020] I decided to take the second semester out of college so I can prioritise and focus on Olympic qualification. But in May [after the postponement] we were back to square one and [I returned] to do some of the summer exams in August. This year [2021] I am finishing the second half of second year. It's great to know that no matter what happens in rowing you will have your education as well." (irishexaminer.com, 14 Jul 2018; Spark to Sport Spotify channel, 05 Jan 2021)

POSTPONEMENT AND 2024 GAMES IN PARIS
She believed the postponement of the Olympic Games in Tokyo would ultimately prove beneficial for her and lightweight pairs crewmate Aoife Casey because of their young age. "A bit of our reaction was kind of like, 'This is a blessing for us' because we are younger athletes and it means we have an extra few months, a year I suppose, to get faster and stronger, and it was nearly a blessing in disguise for us." She also reacted with relief to the news in late 2020 that lightweight rowing events would return at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. "It was a great announcement and it gives us four more years, or three and a half more years, to get faster and stronger. I suppose it does mean that we do have another shot and it doesn't mean that this [Tokyo] is our last chance. We couldn't believe it that we are going to have another chance. It's almost like we need to take the opportunity while we can." (rowingireland.ie, 08 Dec 2020; Spark to Sport Spotify channel, 05 Jan 2021)
