General Interest

General
MOVE TO FLORIDA
He was born in Durham, England, but at age 10 he moved to Florida, United States of America, as his parents wanted him and his brother to experience a new way of life. "We were from quite a small town in the north east of England, so I knew all the local kids and had lots of friends. [The move to Florida] was for a bit of a change of scenery. My parents wanted my brother and I to experience a new life. We were from a small town and they didn't really want us staying there for our whole lives. We wanted to experience something new so it was a big thing for our family. It wasn't easy but it was an adventure." (podtail.com, 20 Mar 2019)

CHOOSING USA OVER GB
He is eligible to represent Great Britain in rowing but, having discovered rowing while in the United States of America, he intends to stay loyal to his adopted nation. "Team USA and the system here has given me a lot and I respect that. The only difference between here and Great Britain is the funding. There's a lot more in Great Britain for rowing but I've had a lot of support here in the US and a lot of people have helped me out when I've needed it in terms of coaching and money. If it was a case of rowing for Great Britain or not rowing at all then I would consider moving but I do see a certain degree of loyalty to the US." (podtail.com, 20 Mar 2019)

FATHER AS HIS COACH
His father was the coach of his rowing team while he was at high school. "He knows me really well which was really important, especially when I was going through a tough phase between ages 15 and 18, learning a lot about the sport and myself. So it was important having him around. We butted heads a few times but that's normal." (podtail.com, 20 Mar 2019)
