"From a young age, I participated in sports year round. Until the end of middle school, I sailed in the summer, played soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, and baseball in the spring. I didn't start to focus on rowing until high school, when I dropped everything except for rowing and basketball. I started rowing for the learn-to-row programme in our town. I think I was the right build for it. My parents, having done it in college, encouraged me to row and it kind of just sucks you in." BREAK AND COMEBACK
He took a two-year break from rowing after he was part of the US men's eight that placed fourth at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He returned to the sport following Mike Teti's appointment as head coach of the US rowing team ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games. "When I finished rowing after Rio, I wanted to work. I had never had a real job, so that was something I wanted to do. Most of my friends lived in San Francisco, and I just wanted to move there and live a normal life for a while. I took a couple of months off, and then started working in San Francisco without intending to come back to the team. I just had this itch, something in my subconscious kept me from getting fat. So even when I was working, I was still working out. I was still going for a run every day, or going to the gym, or doing something for an hour every day. Subconsciously I never let go of the idea that I should stay somewhat in shape. Then I gradually just started training harder, and then started having conversations with Mike about coming back to the team." (row2k.com, 24 Aug 2019)
