She initially trained in swimming, but wanted to follow in the footsteps of her older sister Anna, who took up rowing. "When she started to train in rowing I also became interested, but it was a period of our life when we didn't get on well, so she didn't want me to do the sport with her. But when she moved to the United States to study, I was finally able to start rowing." (radiokrakow.pl, 08 Oct 2017; wioslarstwo-krakow.pl, 01 Jan 2016; eurosport.onet.pl, 31 May 2015)

MEDAL DEDICATED TO SISTER
Shortly before the 2017 World Championships in Sarasota, FL, United States of America, her sister Anna was involved in a traffic accident when she was hit by a bus while cycling in Walcz, Poland. Maria was also there, and provided first aid. She went on to win silver in coxless four at the world championships and dedicated the medal to Anna, who had been due to compete in the team before the accident left her with fractures to her tibia and fibula bones. "It was the worst moment in my life, I thought she was dead. I wish I could have won the medal with her. I paddled thinking about her and I knew I had to perform to make her proud." Anna returned to the sport in 2017 and continued competing until her retirement in August 2020. (SportsDeskOnline, 03 Jun 2021; Facebook team page, 13 Aug 2020; onet.pl, 04 Oct 2017)

LIFESAVING HERO
One evening at a training camp in Kruszwica, Poland in 2014, she noticed people pointing to a person who was struggling to stay afloat in a lake. She jumped fully clothed into the water and swam to save the drowning woman. She pulled the unconscious woman to the shore, gave her first aid and she made a full recovery.
