In 2010 he was diagnosed with exostosis [a bone spur] that affected the tibia and fibula bones in his leg. He underwent surgery during which an artery and nerves were damaged, and he lost four and a half litres of blood on the operating table. He has poor blood circulation and limited movement in the leg as a result, and in 2011 he underwent tendon extension surgery to improve the range of motion in his foot. "My dad was a canoeing coach. He never pushed me to train in canoeing, but encouraged me to take up any sport. I wanted to do pole vault, but there was no section for my age group. Later, I tried volleyball, but I was not good at it. There was also table tennis, but I was not successful, because I was not fully engaged. Finally, at age 15, I decided to train in something seriously. It's late to start a sport career at this age, so I didn't have much choice. My dad suggested rowing, so I tried it. In my first year of training I won silver in the coxless four at the Polish Youth Olympics, and I stayed in the sport." (placpolitechniki1.wordpress.com, 19 Nov 2019)
