He took up the sport in 2010. He moved away from home at age 15 to begin training seriously. "I left home as a 15-year-old kid, 800 kilometres away from his parents. My mother still cries every time I go back to camp. She's not used to it yet. My family expected me to come home, not to stay away. "In the autumn of 2011 I had no idea about rowing. At the beginning of the school year, Mariana Malis, from the Orsova Sports Club, was looking for athletes. She got us all to stand up and measured us. She was torn on whether to choose me, but in the end she did. When I moved away, a classmate told me I wouldn't be able to stay away from home.
