He was inspired to take up rowing after watching the 2012 Olympic Games in London. "Sport wouldn't have been a huge thing in the house where I grew up. We never supported a soccer team or went to rugby matches. It's something I've struggled with in the Irish team because there are some people who are rowing experts." (bbc.com, 16 Dec 2019)

He graduated from Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland with a degree in medicine in 2018. The following year he took a leave of absence from his job as a doctor at Belfast City Hospital to focus on the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, and had planned to return to the post in December 2020. However, in April 2020 he started working at Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry, Ireland, following the postponement of the Games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "I had to go back [to work] as soon as possible. And also it means I can chip in and do something worthwhile. It's like your marital vows. In sickness and in health. This is the sickness part of the healthcare system. This is when you have to step up and do your bit."
