She underwent surgery to both of her feet in March 2020 after experiencing pain caused by having second metatarsal bones that were longer than those of the other toes. That meant the second metatarsal bones bore all of her weight during training and competitions. An injury to the second metatarsal bone in her left foot had previously prevented her from competing at the 2018 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. POSITIVE POSTPONEMENT
Having taken the decision to undergo surgery to her feet in March 2020, she had accepted that she would not be able to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. But the Games' postponement later that month then renewed her hopes of participating in Japan. "The surgery was a very difficult decision for me, not only for the gymnast Deborah, but also for the person. At that moment I was putting the Olympics, which was a priority in my life, to one side. I felt a lot of pain even when I was walking. I was already accepting that I miss the Olympics this time for a greater good and, when I had the operation, I started to put the 2024 Games in my head. But that changed and the dream for Tokyo was very much alive again." (olimpiadatododia.com.br, 10 Sep 2020)
