She began competing in tetrathlon at age five, and took up modern pentathlon in 2002 in Kent, England. At age 15 she was invited to join the national development programme. (Athlete, 23 Jul 2016; kentsport.org, 01 Sep 2015)

Growing up, she was part of The Pony Club and also did tetrathlons. She then started competing in biathlon at school, before moving into pentathlon. "I am really fortunate I came in that route because riding is the hardest thing to pick up. A lot of people come in through only running backgrounds and then try to pick up riding.
