She began the sport at age four. "My karate life started when I was a carefree, bored little four-year-old whose mother strongly believed that all children have hidden potentials. At the age of five, I started having rigorous karate training. After six months, I started competing in tournaments. That was when my love for karate blossomed." (tvnz.co.nz, 06 Jul 2021; sskanz.com, 01 Jan 2015)
:
"My family is really high on security - I had to memorise my phone number and memorise my address, no talking to strangers, don't accept anything from strange people, that sort of thing. My mum gave me an option between ballet or karate, apparently I told her, 'Well, what's going to happen if I get kidnapped? Do you want me to dance in front of them? Or do you want me to fight them off?'" (tvnz.co.nz, 06 Jul 2021; stuff.co.nz, 06 Jul 2021)

"[Kata is] the arts in martial arts." (stuff.co.nz, 06 Jul 2021)

SWITCH TO KATA
She switched from kumite to kata on the advice of sensei Johnny Ling, who believed her stature meant she would be better suited to kata. "Sensei told me when I was 14, 'If you don't grow any taller in a year, you'll stop competing in kumite and do kata'. Because he told me that I can't reach my opponents when I'm fighting and they're so much taller than me and with a longer reach. I didn't grow any taller, I'm still 4ft11 [150cm] but it's actually really beneficial for kata because my centre of gravity is lower." (rnz.co.nz, 06 Jul 2021)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
She has been an instructor at the Shotokan Shitoryu Karate Association [SSKANZ] in New Zealand. "When my family moved to New Zealand from the Philippines, I persisted on finding the right dojo for me and my siblings to train at. SSKANZ was the definite choice for us." (sskanz.com, 01 Jan 2015)

FROM THE PHILIPPINES TO NEW ZEALAND
Born in the Philippines, she moved to New Zealand with her family at age 12, after which she began training with sensei Johnny Ling. (rnz.co.nz, 06 Jul 2021)
