He followed his two older brothers into the sport. "I probably had no choice but judo. I took my first steps on the tatami. I didn't even understand then whether I wanted to do it or not and, when I began to wear a kimono regularly, at age eight, nine or 10, I no longer thought about why I went to the gym.
