Her parents are both from the United States of America and she initially got involved in ju-jitsu. "When I was 13 I decided to move to judo and it was a very meaningful decision for me. I remember my first contest, I lost my first fight and my mother came and whispered in my ear, 'Timna, just get angry.' And then I won all the other fights."
