General Interest

General
Germany won their third Olympic medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. They finished third in their group with a two-win, one-draw, two-loss record before beating the United States of America in the quarterfinals. A penalty shootout loss to the Netherlands in the semifinals put them into the bronze medal game, and a 2-1 win over New Zealand secured them third place.

Germany's Olympic high point came at Athens 2004, where the team beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the final to claim their sole Olympic gold medal and go one better than the silver they won at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. Before reunification, West Germany claimed silver at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.

The German team's best period at the Champions Trophy was between 1991 and 2008. Although they only won one title in that time [in 2006], they finished in the top three on a total of nine occasions. They have had less success at the World Cup, reaching the podium only once [third place in 1998] in seven attempts between 1994 and 2018. The Germans were knocked out at the quarterfinal stage by Spain at the 2018 World Cup in London.

Germany have long been a force at continental level, finishing in the top three at every edition of the EuroHockey championships between 1991 and 2019, with the exception of 2017. They were European champions in 2007 and 2013, and finished runner-up at the most recent edition of the tournament in 2019.
