General Interest

General
Great Britain arrive at the Tokyo Games as reigning Olympic champions, having beaten the Netherlands in a penalty shootout in the final at Rio 2016. The British team had finished top of Group B and then defeated Spain and New Zealand to reach the gold medal match. Their victory in Brazil stopped the Dutch from winning a third consecutive gold medal at the Games.

Great Britain made the semifinals at three consecutive Olympic Games between 1988 and 1996, winning bronze in 1992 in Barcelona. The team were ranked eighth at Sydney 2000, and did not qualify for the 2004 Games in Athens. They placed sixth on their return to the Games in 2008 in Beijing, and then won bronze as hosts at London 2012.

The British team secured a spot for the 2020 Games in Tokyo with a 5-1 aggregate victory over Chile in the 2019 Women's FIH Olympic Qualifiers.
