General Interest

General
Despite being the most successful nation in men's Olympic hockey with eight gold medals, India have not finished on the podium since 1980. Their most recent medal was gold in the reduced six-team tournament at the 1980 Games in Moscow, where a number of nations boycotted the event. They have competed at each edition of the Games since that gold, with the exception of Beijing in 2008.

At Rio 2016 the Indian team reached the quarterfinals after recording two victories during the group stage, which included a 2-1 win over eventual gold medallists Argentina. India were eliminated in the last eight after losing 3-1 to Belgium and were ranked eighth in the final standings.

India recorded a sixth-place finish at the 2018 World Cup, the team's best ranking at the tournament since finishing fifth in 1994. They have finished in each of the podium positions at the World Cup once - third in 1971, second in 1973, and as winners in 1975.

After a Champions Trophy podium drought since 1982, India challenged for the title in 2016. They fell one short, however, when Australia beat them in a penalty shootout in the final. The Indian team reached the final again in 2018, but Australia denied them victory for a second time by penalty shootout.

India have three Asian Games titles and 15 medals in total, with their most recent gold coming in 2014. At the Commonwealth Games, they won silver medals in 2010 and 2014.
