Previously a sprinter, he was encouraged to take up hockey by his coaches at the GV Raja Sports School in Thiruvananthapuram, India. Soon after getting involved, he became attracted to the goalkeeping aspect of the sport. "Goalkeeping is one area in hockey where you're always accounted for individually. Forwards have to depend on the passes from midfielders, even drag-flickers have to depend on the pusher and stopper. My coach from the junior days said goalkeeping is one area where you can put up a one-man show. I didn't hesitate." (firstpost.com, 13 Jul 2016; timesofindia.indiatimes.com, 23 May 2016)

FATHERHOOD
His wife gave birth to their second child during a period when he was unable to play for the national team because of a serious knee injury he suffered in 2017. "The injury was a good thing. I was in a hockey shell before. I never imagined Sreejesh without hockey. But these three months have given me the courage to think that a life without hockey is possible. There's a world outside, there's your family. You need to be with everyone. I missed all this with my first child. I missed watching her grow up. I saw her every three months. But now I'm getting some time to spend with my baby. Now I wake up at midnight, change diapers, and carry the baby. Now I feel I'm a father." (thehindu.com, 23 Sep 2017)

SUSPENSION
In January 2018 he was put on a 12-month probation period and banned for 15 days after he participated in a charity football match while unable to represent the India national hockey team because of a knee injury. The Hockey India disciplinary committee found him to be guilty of a Level 1 offence of the Hockey India Code of Conduct. (firstpost.com, 04 Jan 2018; indianexpress.com, 04 Jan 2018)
