General Interest

General
Germany have won three gold medals at the Olympic Games, which includes consecutive titles in 2008 and 2012. They had to settle for bronze at Rio 2016, losing to Argentina in the semifinals before beating the Netherlands on penalties in the third-place playoff, but they remain one of only three teams [along with India and the Netherlands] to have won back-to-back gold medals at the Olympic Games.

Germany's other gold medal came at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, where they beat Australia 2-1 in the final. They were losing finalists at the 1936 Games, and also claimed bronze medals in 1928 and 2004.

The German team won their spot at the Tokyo Olympic Games through the 2019 Men's FIH Olympic Qualifiers. They played Austria in a two-match series held in Monchengladbach, which they won 5-0 and 5-3 to take a 10-3 aggregate victory.

Germany are two-time champions at the World Cup [2002, 2006], and also claimed the Champions Trophy title on seven occasions between 1991 and 2014. However, they have had a relatively barren run since the 2016 Olympic Games, with a best result of fourth in the 2017 World League. They placed fifth at the 2018 World Cup, and were ranked sixth in the 2019 Pro League and fourth at the 2019 EuroHockey Championships.
