In May 2020 she had a small part of a bone removed from her foot. As a result she wore a protective boot for around one week. (Instagram profile, 04 May 2020)

In April 2019 she was involved in a freak accident while on a training run. A rubbish bin dropped from a truck, hitting her on the head and leaving her requiring stitches. (nzherald.co.nz, 25 Apr 2019; home.nzcity.co.nz, 26 Apr 2019)

She broke her thumb in 2013 and missed the final stage of the 2012/13 World League in Tucuman, Argentina. She returned to the New Zealand national squad in February 2014. (nz.sports.yahoo.com, 25 Nov 2013; nzcity.co.nz, 19 Dec 2013)

She began playing hockey at age five. "It was the sport I got into at school and I just kept it up. I had a great group of friends who I played hockey with and we went through representative regional hockey together. After school it wasn't really an option for me to stop or give up hockey." (stormandindia.com.au, 28 Jul 2018)
:
"I was into a lot of other sports growing up which I loved just as much as hockey. I played because I enjoyed it and I truly believe that's the only reason why you should do anything. Once I finished school I moved up to Auckland for university and at the end of that year made the Black Sticks. I think about the decisions I made leading up to making the team and it amazes me how things have a way of working out. I was originally going to take a gap year and go on a big [overseas trip] with a few of my friends but last minute changed my mind and moved to Auckland. I often wonder what would have happened if I didn't make that decision. Probably fair to say I am very happy I did." (unomagazine.co.nz, 15 Mar 2017; fq.co.nz, 07 Apr 2015)

In addition to national team training, she incorporates Pilates into her personal training. "I add Pilates when I can, to work on my strength and conditioning. We have to be quite structured with our training, because it's very easy to overdo it or under do it and not get what you need. A typical day will be 1.5 hours on the turf for a group session, then straight to the gym for another hour and a half. I might factor in a Pilates class in the evening, or go for a walk or do some stretching." (viva.co.nz, 22 Jan 2021)

"I love to sing, not very well but I give it a go, so my pre match routine often involves a bit of that. Other than that I keep things pretty relaxed as the build up to games often vary and so if your routine is too regimented, when something changes and you can't adapt, it isn't ideal." (fq.co.nz, 22 Aug 2016)

"If you don't think it's possible, you're absolutely wasting your time." (olympic.org, 28 Jul 2020)

RIO HEARTACHE FUELS TOKYO DETERMINATION
She said she felt "gutted" after losing the bronze medal match to Germany at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro following a penalty shootout. "To come fourth was pretty disheartening, considering we played some of the best hockey we ever had, especially in the quarterfinal versus Australia, and then weren't able to finish it off. But I was saying to my mum the other day that, while you'd never be happy with fourth, you have to be proud of your effort regardless, especially for a small country on the other side of the world. And I think having come fourth in Rio, and having got so close, it is definitely an incentive [for Tokyo]. We all know that we have it in us and that we are so close. There are really only minute tweaks that we need to make, and the lines are so fine between coming first and coming eighth. So, that is a big incentive for us to really grab hold of the opportunity to go again because we all know it's possible." (olympic.org, 28 Jul 2020; unomagazine.co.nz, 15 Mar 2017)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
She teaches Pilates at a local fitness studio in New Zealand, which she continued online during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. "I've been teaching Pilates at Reform in Takapuna, which I'm really loving. I've always been interested in the body and how it works and movement as a whole. I've suffered through a few injuries and found Pilates is perfect for everybody regardless of age, stage or injury status. I think it's easy to over-complicate exercise. There are so many things you can do and endless ways to move the body. During the first lockdown I was putting some workouts on my Instagram [and] I was really amazed at how many people tuned in, so I kept doing them and it was really satisfying. I think it was good for people to have something to look forward to exercise-wise because it can be so hard to motivate yourself. It was my way of making it [lockdown] a little bit easier for people." (viva.co.nz, 22 Jan 2021)
