In December 2017 he injured his Achilles tendon during a warm-up match ahead of the World League tournament in India. He underwent surgery later that month. He walked on crutches for two weeks and trained on a reduced schedule for the next four months. In May 2018 he decided to withdraw from the Champions Trophy in Breda, Netherlands, in order to make a full recovery ahead of the World Cup later in the year.
