General Interest

General
Montenegro secured a spot for the Tokyo Games through the Women's Olympic Qualification Tournaments held in March 2021. The Montenegrins won Tournament 3 of the event, advancing from an incredibly tight three-way battle with Norway and Romania. Each team won one match in the competition, with Montenegro's superior goal difference making the difference.

Montenegro are competing at the Olympic Games for the third time at Tokyo 2020, following appearances in 2012 and 2016. They made a spectacular debut, claiming silver in London after going down 26-23 to Norway in the gold medal match, but the team found the 2016 Games more difficult and did not win a match in their group. They were eventually ranked 11th.

Recent results on the world stage have been promising, with Montenegro placing sixth at the 2017 World Championship in Germany and finishing fifth at the 2019 edition of the tournament in Japan. In 2019 the team finished with a four-win, one-loss record in the preliminary round, and then won two of three in the main round to narrowly miss out on the semifinals. They went on to beat Serbia in the fifth-place playoff.

At continental level, Montenegro's sole European title came in 2012. Since then their best finish at the tournament is fourth in 2014. The team reached the main round at the 2020 European Championship in Denmark, but they could only finish fourth in their group and did not qualify for the semifinals. They ended the tournament ranked eighth.
