STOMA SURGERY
At age 18 she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis [chronic inflammation of the large intestine]. In October 2018 she underwent emergency surgery which left her with a stoma, an opening in her abdomen connected to the end of her digestive system. "I had an ileostomy, which means they removed my entire large intestine, and now I have around five centimetres of my small intestine outside my body that I connect to an ostomy bag." She documents her condition through an Instagram account to remove the stigma around stomas. "One year ago you [the illness] was the worst thing that happened to me. But it made me realise that you get used to being sick, that you get used to feeling bad. So today I have an incredible amount that I am grateful that I can do thanks to you [her stoma]. Thanks to you I am able to play handball, but above all thank you for allowing me to live a normal life again, without being in pain."
