He initially played softball in primary school, but decided to take up another sport when baseball was not included in the programme for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He was encouraged to take up handball by a coach at a talent identification camp in Fukuoka, Japan. "As I wanted to compete at the Olympic Games, I didn't mind getting involved in any sporting event. I tried many different sports and I was fascinated by handball. I was also told by staff of Fukuoka Handball Association, 'You would be definitely able to be part of the Japanese national team'."
