She was inspired to compete at the Olympic Games after watching the Japanese men's ski jumping team win gold in large hill at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. She initially played volleyball in middle school, but thought her height would make it difficult to become elite in the sport. She was then encouraged to take up handball by her school teacher.
