General Interest

General
Mexico booked their ticket to Tokyo by winning the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship in March 2021, beating Honduras on penalties in the final. The result ensured that, for the third consecutive Olympic Games, Mexico and Honduras were the two teams to qualify from the North, Central American and Caribbean region.

Mexico's clear highlight at the Games is the gold medal they won in 2012 - the only time they finished on the podium in 11 Olympic appearances since 1928. They triumphed 2-1 in the final in London against a Brazilian side featuring the likes of Neymar and Thiago Silva, having beaten Senegal and Japan in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Prior to 2012 their best result was fourth as host nation at the 1968 Games in Mexico City.

At Rio 2016, the Mexicans started the defence of their Olympic title promisingly. A 2-2 draw with eventual silver medallists Germany was followed by a 5-1 thrashing of Fiji, meaning their hopes of qualification for the quarterfinals rested on their final group match against the Republic of Korea. The Koreans prevailed 1-0, resulting in early elimination and a ninth-place finish for Mexico.
