Since 2018 he has also been head coach of the Republic of Korea U22 men's national football team.

He was assistant coach at Korean clubs Kookmin Bank and Cheonan Ilhwa before taking up the head coach role at Seongnam Ilhwa between 2004 and 2008. He has also served as head coach at Korean clubs Gangwon FC [2012-13], Seongnam FC [2014-16] and Gwangju [2017]. He also coached Chinese club Henan Jianye from 2010 to 2011.
