DORTMUND BUS BOMBING
When he played with German club Borussia Dortmund he was present when there was a terrorist attack on the team in April 2017. Three roadside bombs were detonated next to the team bus as it travelled to the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund, Germany, for a UEFA Champions League quarterfinal against Monaco. His Spanish teammate Marc Bartra was the only player injured in the incident. "We thought, 'We're going to die'. It was a really hard experience to live through. It changes you. After something like that happens you're easier, more relaxed, about certain things that you used to worry about. Fortunately Marc's a strong guy. Like me, he learnt a lot of things about life. I'm happy to be alive and enjoying playing football." (theguardian.com, 25 Oct 2017)
