General Interest

General
The Korean women's sabre team qualified for Tokyo by ranking among the world's top four nations, and will be making their second Olympic appearance at the 2020 Games. The Republic of Korea debuted in the event at Rio 2016, where they lost out to Ukraine 45-40 at the quarterfinal stage before victories over France and Poland in the classification rounds secured fifth spot.

The Korean team went without a medal at the world championships until beginning a run of three successive podium finishes at the most recent editions of the tournament. They finished in the runners-up spot behind Italy in 2017 to secure their first medal at the world championships, and followed up that performance with back-to-back bronze medals in 2018 and 2019. At the 2019 World Championships in Budapest their run was ended by France in the semifinals, but the team bounced back to take bronze ahead of the Italian team.

At continental level, the Republic of Korea have battled it out with the People's Republic of China in the final of each edition of the Asian Games since the event was introduced at the 2002 Games. The Chinese team emerged victorious from the first three finals [2002, 2006 and 2010], but the Koreans gained a measure of revenge by taking the gold medal at the two most recent editions of the Games in 2014 and 2018.
