General Interest

General
Hungary qualified for their 12th Olympic appearance in women's team foil as the top-ranked European nation outside the world's top four teams. They claimed silver in the inaugural women's team foil competition at the 1960 Games in Rome, and went one better four years later in Tokyo to secure the Hungarian team's only Olympic title. The Hungarian team had seven podium finishes at the Olympic Games between 1960 and 1988, but they have failed to win another medal since.

At their most recent appearance in Beijing in 2008, they narrowly lost out to the United States of America 35-33 in the semifinals before a further defeat to Italy in the bronze medal match left them in fourth position.

Despite historical form at the world championships, Hungary are without a medal on the world stage since 1994. In the 21 editions since 1994, the best result the team has managed is fourth, which they have achieved on six occasions. At the 2019 World Championships on home soil in Budapest, they lost to Canada in the round of 16, and eventually went on to rank 10th after classification rounds against Austria, People's Republic of China and Germany.

The Hungarian women have won seven medals at the European championships, including two gold medals. Their most recent European title came in 2007.
