General Interest

General
France secured a place at the 2020 Olympic Games by ranking among the world's top four nations. Tokyo will be their 11th Olympic Games, and they will hope to add to their three Olympic medals after narrowly missing out on the podium at the last Games to feature the event in 2012.

In London the French team defeated Poland, before a semifinal loss to eventual champions Italy saw them face the Republic of Korea in the bronze medal match. The Korean team prevailed 45-32, but it was France's best result at the Olympic Games since their bronze medal at Los Angeles 1984. That was their third consecutive podium finish, after silver in 1976 and gold at Moscow 1980, where they beat the Soviet Union in the final.

At the world championships, France have been consistent contenders in recent years, and claimed medals [one silver, four bronze] at five of the seven editions between 2013 and 2019. In 2018 they finished third before just missing out on a medal at the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, where a semifinal loss to Italy was followed by a tight 45-43 defeat at the hands of the US team. France have won two world titles, which came consecutively in 1950 and 1951.
