General Interest

General
The United States of America qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games as the top-ranked nation from the Americas outside the world's top four teams. Tokyo will be their fourth Olympic Games, following appearances in 1996, 2012 and 2016.

After ranking eighth on home soil in Atlanta in 1996, the US team won bronze in their next Olympic appearance at London 2012. They were eliminated in the semifinals by the Republic of Korea in 2012, but recovered to take the bronze following a 31-30 victory over the Russian Federation in sudden death. In Rio in 2016, they lost out to Romania in a tight quarterfinal before securing a fifth-place finish with wins over France and the Korean team in the classification rounds.

The United States of America were crowned world champions for the first time in 2018, narrowly beating the Republic of Korea 18-17 in the final. They failed to defend their title one year later at the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, where they were beaten quarterfinalists at the hands of Italy, before going on to rank fifth.

At continental level, the US team won five Pan American Games titles from seven appearances between 1991 and 2019, including gold at the last three editions [2011, 2015 and 2019].
