Her older sister Kelley also represents the United States of America in fencing. Together they won bronze in team epee at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, and competed at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Their father Robert was a pentathlete who coached them for most of their career. Their mother Tracy was an epee fencer. Her parents Robert and Tracy Hurley were both fencers. She and her older sister Kelley followed in their footsteps and were coached by their parents. "Our parents met in fencing. We would go to tournaments together and they would fence the older age groups and we would fence the young, youth age groups. I can't imagine it any other way because our parents both used to fence.
