General Interest

General
Tokyo 2020 will be Italy's third appearance in the event at the Olympic Games. They qualified for Tokyo as the top-ranked European team outside the world's top four nations.

Italy won silver in the inaugural women's team epee competition at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, but did not compete at the next two editions of the Olympic Games in which the event was contested. Returning to the Olympic stage at the 2012 Games in London, the Italians followed up defeat to the United States of America in the quarterfinals with a loss to Romania and victory over Ukraine in the classification rounds to finish with a final ranking of seventh.

Italy were crowned world champions for the first time in Turkey in 2009, and have since claimed bronze at the tournament on three occasions. Their most recent medal came at the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, where they bounced back from a semifinal loss to the People's Republic of China to overcome Ukraine 45-36 in the bronze medal match.

At continental level, they have not been crowned European champions since 2007, but they did take bronze at the most recent edition of the European championships in Dusseldorf in 2019, defeating France in the third-place play-off.
