General Interest

General
Estonia are making their third Olympic appearance in women's team epee in Tokyo. They qualified for the 2020 Games thanks to their world ranking, which saw them allocated the last available spot due to Africa not having a team ranked inside the top 16.

They contested the event on its debut at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, finishing fifth. Their next appearance on the Olympic stage came 20 years later in Rio in 2016, when they beat the Republic of Korea in the last eight before defeat to the People's Republic of China in the semifinals saw them face the Russian Federation for the bronze medal. They lost the match to their Russian opponents 37-31 and finished the tournament ranked fourth.

The Estonian team bounced back from the disappointment of leaving the 2016 Olympic Games without a medal by claiming their first world title the following year. At the 2017 World Championships in Leipzig, they gained a measure of revenge against the Chinese team that knocked them out of the previous year's Olympic Games by triumphing 45-33. Estonia have achieved top-10 finishes at each edition of the world championships from 2010 onwards, including winning silver behind the Russian team in 2014.

At continental level, since 2012 the team have reached the podium at five of the eight editions of the European championships, including gold medals in 2013 and 2016. At the most recent edition in 2019, Estonia lost to Italy in the quarterfinals and finished the tournament with a ranking of seventh.
