General Interest

General
Italy have won the most Olympic medals of any nation in men's team sabre. Their 20 podium finishes is four more than their closest rivals Hungary, and only the Hungarian team have amassed more Olympic golds [10] than Italy's four, which equals the Soviet Union's total titles in the event. Italy won back-to-back gold medals in 1920 and 1924, then also triumphed at the 1972 and 1984 Games. They won 16 medals from 16 appearances between 1908 and 1988, and have finished on the podium at the last three Olympic Games to feature the event.

The Italian team qualified for Tokyo as one of the world's top four ranked nations. At their last Olympic appearance, the 2012 Games in London, they were defeated 45-37 by eventual champions the Republic of Korea in the semifinals before overcoming the Russian Federation 45-40 in the bronze medal match. They also claimed bronze at Beijing 2008, where they also beat the Russian team in the third place match, and won silver at Athens 2004 after defeat in the final to France.

Italy are also among the most decorated teams at the world championships, with six titles and 28 total medals since 1937. They were last crowned world champions in 2015, when they defeated hosts the Russian Federation in the final in Moscow. They won medals at the last three editions of the world championships, including the 2019 edition in Budapest, where they bounced back from a semifinal defeat to the hosts to beat Germany in the bronze medal match.

At continental level, they have won seven European championship medals from seven appearances since 2013, including two titles.
