General Interest

General
The Islamic Republic of Iran were awarded a place in Tokyo as the highest ranked team from the Asia and Oceania zone outside the world's top four nations. They are making their second appearance in the event at the Olympic Games, following the 1976 Games in Montreal, where they did not progress from the group stage.

The Iranian team have made a marked improvement at world level in recent years. At the 2016 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro they ranked fourth, having previously never placed higher than ninth at the tournament. They went on to finish fifth at the 2017 World Championships and sixth at the following two editions. At the 2019 edition in Budapest, they defeated Spain and the People's Republic of China before losing 45-29 to hosts Hungary in the quarterfinals. In the classification rounds they overcame Georgia and were beaten by the Russian team.

The Islamic Republic of Iran have won silver at the last three editions of the Asian championships and at the most recent two Asian Games. At the 2018 and 2014 Asian Games they were beaten by the Republic of Korea in the gold medal match on both occasions.
