General Interest

General
Germany were awarded a place at the 2020 Olympic Games as one of the top four ranked teams in the world. They have won two men's team sabre Olympic medals since making their Games debut in 1912, claiming bronze in 1936 and 2000.

The last time the event was contested at the Olympic Games, in 2012, Germany were defeated by the Republic of Korea in the quarterfinals before beating Belarus and the People's Republic of China to secure a fifth-place finish. Their previous appearance was at Sydney 2000, where they won bronze behind France and gold medallists the Russian Federation after beating Romania in the third place match.

Germany finished fourth at the 2019 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, with a 45-38 third place match loss to Italy denying them their first world championship podium since 2015. They have won a sole world title, which came in 2014 as they beat the Republic of Korea in the final in Kazan. Their next best result at the tournament is third, which they have managed on five occasions since 1937.

Germany arrive in Tokyo as the reigning European champions. They claimed victory on home soil at the 2019 European Championships in Dusseldorf after a tight 45-43 triumph in the final against Hungary.
